Voice you need at a price you love
Small Type’s VoIP services are well-adapted to our smaller customers thanks to the high flexibility we can offer. Our solutions start as small as a single phone with a single line and can scale all the way to thousands of lines and numbers. The best part is that you can add capability as you’re ready to grow, so starting with a smaller system won’t lock you into “Small Business-land” forever.
Small Type Basic VoIP Systems
Our most basic systems consist of a single Internet-enabled phone tied to one or multiple phone numbers. Phones can either be purchased up-front or provided as part of a monthly rate plan. We offer two plans for calling minutes: unlimited minutes but limited calls—you can use as many minutes as you want but can only have two calls on the line at once, or unlimited calls and pay-per-minute— you pay a (low) set amount per minute but can have as many calls going at once as your Internet connection can support. We find that many of our single-phone customers prefer the unlimited-minutes option as it’s the closest to a traditional wired-phone offering.
When you’re ready for more numbers or more handsets, it’s easy to expand. Just contact your Small Type consultant and we can easily add features to your system. A good first expansion is a toll-free number to improve your business identity. Those numbers are easily available at a low monthly cost plus the per-minute charges for the toll-free usage. You can combine multiple numbers on the same device; you could have hundreds of incoming numbers that all ring to the same phone, for example. Many of our customers that operate in multiple cities choose to do this in order to provide their customers with a convenient local number to call. Handsets are also easily available—you can add an additional handset just by purchasing it from us or adding it to your rate plan, and expand into a full office system by either purchasing or adding an Uplink module to your system.
What do I need for a VoIP system?
A single-handset system just requires an Internet connection and a credit card (to pay for service). Once you start expanding, additional hardware and Internet requirements come into play. To adequately support more than two phones on a standard cable modem or DSL connection we recommend an Uplink module. This device plugs into your network and acts as an intermediary between your phones and our network, reducing your data usage and allowing you to make intercom and voicemail calls without impacting your connection speed. As your call usage grows, so do the benefits of having an Uplink installed. Most cable/DSL connections can handle only 3-5 uncompressed calls at once before failing, whereas an Uplink module increases that number to between 30 and 40. Once you surpass 30 simultaneous calls, it’s time to start looking at upgrading your Internet connection to support the additional volume.
How will I be billed for my VoIP system?
Small Type rate plans bill monthly based on usage or, in the case of unlimited rate plans, the quantity of lines ordered. In addition, you can either purchase your handsets and Uplinks outright or lease them as part of your rate plan. Both options have advantages—the outright purchase of your equipment will save you money in the long term, while leasing guarantees that you’ll always have the latest phones and supporting hardware. We find that many of our clients prefer to lease in order to avoid the substantial initial outlay that the hardware can represent. If you’re interested in leasing to own, we offer buyout options for your hardware at the end of the lease term.
What if I want to build and administer a system myself?
We can do that! As an authorized Digium reseller we can order you a Digium Switchvox PBX system that meets your needs. Switchvox systems are supported directly through Digium and can be configured by you, the end user, to meet your personal needs. If rolling your own is the way you’d like to go, we’d be happy to get you the hardware and software you need. If you choose Switchvox we can terminate your calls through our Small Type VoIP service or help you get set up with a provider of your choosing.
